Jim Zanetto wanted to live in an environmentally friendly place so he built his underground home as part of a cutting-edge shared community in Davis, Calif., called Village Homes. His eco-abode contains just more than 1,000-square-feet of living space.

Zanetto's rooftop is covered with a garden, which besides being attractive has enormous thermal benefits. He says in the 20-plus years he's lived in the house he's never had to pay utility bills to heat or cool the place. Inside, the dining, family and kitchen spaces are combined in one great room.
