Island Style - Interior Design 2016

So I'm fairly certain we may head to the Bahamas for a long weekend at the end of the month! I've always been drawn to island style.....Bohemian prints, preppy monogrammed linens, graphic wallpapers, white walls and natural fiber rugs all blend beautifully. Whether it be Nantucket or Harbour Island there's something very inviting and relaxed about an island home. Every Island has their own story and feel but these elements often exist in most home designs. Living one mile from the beach myself, I've incorporated a number of these elements into my own home! (insert heart).. I am crushing on this beauty today as I work in my new sunny office. Interior design by designer Amanda Lindroth , it's located on Harbour Island...All images via Coastal Living.

Cozy White Warm Bohemian Bedrooms ..... - Interior Design 2016

Cozy White Bohemian Bedroom: Styled by Urban Outfitters

Relaxing warm white bedroom
White bedroom: From Ikea....love that lampshade!!
Dreamy, warm white bedroom

Here are some beautiful white bedrooms to prove that white doesn't have to feel minimal and clinical. Using layers of cream and white textiles, including knits, sheepskins, and fluffy rugs etc... can still give a chilled out, cozy bohemian vibe to your room. Of course house plants and natural wood floors also help, but for those of you with carpets like me, layered rugs made from natural fibers also do a perfect job.......or a dreamy beach view....swoon

White bedroom: The most dreamy view!

Shelter Loves.... - Interior Design 2016

Happy Friday! Hope you all had a fabulous week. With February almost over we are certainly looking on the up and up weather wise around here! Although, if it's warm one day and I allow my eight year old son to wear shorts to school and frigid the next day, my son isn't happy. What is it with boys and sport shorts? Really, it's winter buddy. My rule around here is they are a "no go" under 55 degrees. Anyhow, here's what made me smile this week!!

1. YES! YES!
2. Off the shoulder tops are on my radar. This one was from the J.Crew 2016 Spring show, I also love this one.
3. and 4. I've been dying to go on a shopping spree lately......I love carrying little clutches, especially at night. I have a fold over version on my wish list. Clare V. has some of my favorites. This blush pretty would work with so many Spring and Summer looks. I think I need to add it to my cart! Top clutch link, bottom clutch.
5. Okay, not to get personal..but my belly has been feeling off lately. Maybe it comes with age? No idea but green smoothies and anti-bloating foods such as celery, ginger and avocado have been on my menu lately. Lots of exercise and less wine has been too. (yes, wine) Although, I'm looking forward to my 5 pm glass tonight! Here is a list of great green smoothies to try. Darn you father time, I want my flat belly back..
6. I came across these cool drawings by artist Rachel Perry yesterday. Her explanation on her artistic process of each "Chiral" drawing is pretty cool...I love the colors and organic feel.
Peace out, have a great weekend!

A beautiful relaxed bohemian Artists home in Baltimore - Interior Design 2016

A Beautiful Relaxed Bohemian Artists Home in Baltimore

Having lived in Belarus, New York, Pennsylvania and now Maryland, Daria Souvorova has seen her fair share of apartments. Moving can be tiresome, but it has taught her exactly what a home must have in order for her creativity and happiness to flourish. Her latest move saw her strolling around Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood looking for a new apartment. Checklist in hand, she was eager to find a place with “decorated mantels, parquet floors, huge windows, chandeliers and high ceilings.”

It was another feature, however, that had Daria pining for this 2-bedroom walkup: leaded, glass windows. Every room in the 800-square-foot apartment has them. The windows’ history and beauty immediately caught her eye, but the planner in Daria had to make doubly sure this was the right fit. In the same thoughtful manner in which she approached her apartment search, she crafted a 2D, scale model of the walkup. She even gridded out furniture beforehand so she could know exactly how every item would fit inside! Luckily this exercise proved the home’s worth, and she moved right in.

Out of the box - Interior Design 2016

Anyone who knows me, understands that I prefer designs that don't feel too formulaic or predictable. In the end, I design with my client's needs and wishes in mind of course but we always love to throw in some fresh ideas over here at Shelter! My client's always appreciate the perspective. I enjoyed the entire OKL house tour of stylist Jessica de Ruiter's home. It's organic, inviting and well, unpredictable. (She is a stylist after all). I especially loved her office and daughter's bedroom. It's a functional but cozy space with artistic moments abound. Jessica's quote resonated with me "art appreciation starts young". I agree and try to invest in pieces I love both for myself and kiddies. The layered Moroccan rugs really add warmth and depth to James's bedroom. I'll be adding a few new vintage rugs to my house this Spring. Enjoy this entire tour here.

I find great rug choices on both Etsy and One King's Lane

Secret Garden.... Ultimate Indoor Pool... - Interior Design 2016

Check out this indoor pool area that I found over at Desire to Inspire!! This place is totally magical isnt it? It reminds me of a cross between my gym's swimming pool and a botanical garden.... the perfect combination!

It is designed by Australian Landscape Gardening firm Secret Garden . The only thing I would do differently was maybe replace the white plastic chair with an Eames style lounger and choosing terrecotta or basket pots for my plants... but I am just being picky :)

Honestly, I can't really complain about this winter..(besides a personally shitty, awful January but we all weather our own storms and usually come out better off on the other side)...things are much better now. I'm not an over packer anymore, here are some of the essentials I will pack!! (hopefully it happens)

Cottage Love #33 - Interior Design 2016

Hello, hello! I am still here, alive and well. I took some much needed time off and headed up North to ski with Matty and my children for a few days. They had a school break last week, soooo we embraced it! I'm excited to be back and am working on a slew of great projects this Spring!!

You know I love myself a great cottage so I thought I'd kick off the week looking at a charming exterior today! The weather in Northeast getting brighter and warmer by the day. It's amazing how the warmer weather and longer days can make you (well me) so happy! I'm also working from my new office this week, woot woot! Onto my post....

I have a confession, I'm a real estate stalker. I love driving around town and spotting houses for sale. I also peruse Zillow every week for new listings. It's a favorite past time my boyfriend and I share. I dream of and envision putting an addition on my own little house too, not sure what I'll end up doing but dreaming is fun for sure..I came across this revamp of a Cape style home by architect Ross Piper via  Southern Living, what do you think? Besides the chimney looking a bit out of proportion, I love it! All images: Southern Living
AFTER
Here is the "before" shot. The architect stated that the home was just "wanted to be symmetrical". I'd have to agree.

Here are the beautiful details of the design:

A third dormer was added, they were also given more substance.

I am adoring the new lattice detail columns and prominent entrance.

And let's not forget the exterior of the home. It opens up to a beautiful backyard. Added was a gorgeous, large porch and sitting area. Yes, please to this beauty!

Fritz Hansen Milan Showroom Updated - Interior Design 2016

While we are working hard to put the final touches on the new CMID blog behind the scenes, it has been instructive to look at old postings and wonder about the progress or changes that may have been made over time.  Measuring change is, we think, an important exercise in interior design as a means to draw inspiration from established style or assessing your own ideas against new and innovative thinking. It keeps you sharp.

Consider the contrast between the Republic of Fritz Hansen Milan Showroom circa 2013, which you can see here and its showroom at the Salone del Mobile 2015, the world's most important furniture fair in Milan, as shown.  The shift in style and presentation is quite stark. The contrast is illustrative as to how Fritz Hansen aims to promote ideas as to how to use its products by having settings that is, perhaps, easier for customers to visualise, and indeed understand. The warmer, more homely stage that stylist Christine Rudolph has designed for last year's Salone enables Fritz Hansen products - old and new -  to better perform in a way that highlights quality and, importantly, practical application.

Whereas the 2013 presentation was rather clinical in its form, the slightly dishevelled look of the 2015 incarnation speaks more about the design practicality of the products without detracting their style worth.

Let's be honest, the lived-in look of the presentation will be familiar to many and, we think, helps better explain the products.

The value of natural light cannot be underestimated in showcasing interior products. The 2015 presentation uses it with great effect, bringing the room to life.

The bikes, the books, the casually placed throw rugs are key supporting  players to the main attraction of the presentation.  The warmth and personality they add it each room only brings out the presence of the Fritz Hansen products.

This could have been a somewhat sterile view were not for the shoes, which softens the visual in a nice way.

An unmade bed - good heavens! And yet, it forms a critical centrepiece to showcase the surrounding products.

CMID does a lot of kitchen work and we admire this one for its simplicity, efficiency, and openness.  Intriguing splash back I might add. The colour palette works really well in promoting the kitchen's role as a inviting focal point in any household.
