The hand made home of.... Chris Martin - Interior Design 2016

How stunning is this fairytale cabin that I found over at Inhabitat? The handmade home in Bloomington Indiana is surrounded by woodland and has been built by and lived in by Chris Martin and his family since the 1980's when he decided to build a home that would reflect his families values and needs. The home has been a labour of love and it totally shows doesnt it?

I could see myself here... with a herb garden and a pack of dogs, i would be extremely happy.

Project Northlake: Kitchen Reno - After Pictures - Interior Design 2016

Well guys, we made it here to the fun part - after photos! Getting to work with my parents as clients was such an amazing and unique experience. We had a few tense moments and many fun ones, and I am so happy with the final product. More importantly - they are happy. For over 30 years my parents have been putting me and my brothers first, and it makes my heart so glad to see them do this for themselves. They really deserve it!

The space feels so much brighter, lighter, bigger, and up to date. It also functions better and has way more storage. I know we will make many more memories together as a family in this kitchen!

Taking out the railing and bringing the cabinets right to the ceiling really increases the feeling of space. The light cabinet colour helps with this too. The cabinets are solid maple and sprayed in Simply White by Benjamin Moore. It is a slightly creamy white, which is warmer, more traditional, and works better with the style of the rest of the house than a cooler white would.

We went with polished nickel as our metal finish. It has a warmer tone than chrome, so it works great if you want to mix in brass finishes as well (we didn't do that here, but mixing of metals in the kitchen is becoming increasingly popular and is a look I personally love, so I'm passing on that handy little trick). Our hardware is the Studio Collection from Hickory Hardware in 3" and 5".

The hardware selection is actually one of those tense moments that I was talking about, as my parents and I had differing views on what the hardware should be...and by different views, I mean they were picking out some crazy 90's looking curvy things. When we found the Studio Collection, however, we all knew that we had a winner. It has nice clean lines with just enough detail to keep it from feeling modern or trendy. We were mindful of picking classic elements that would stand the test of time.
This is true of our backsplash as well. The oriental white marble backsplash from Creekside Tile in Toronto will never go out of style. The classic subway tile pattern in a slightly smaller size (2"x4") is simple and clean, and the natural material has beautiful variation in tones of cream, white and grey.
The quartz countertops are speckled to hide crumbs so my mom isn't constantly scrubbing. I had to push my parents into quartz a bit (it has a higher price tag), but it is the best product on the market in terms of durability without compromising appearance.
This feature of the microwave cabinet coming down to sit on the counter adds extra storage and function. It also makes the microwave look more built in without the high price tag.
The old kitchen had a desk on the end of the run of cabinets. We still needed a spot for the phone and stationary items, but we chose to end the run of cabinets with a deep pantry. This way, the (sometimes messy) 'office' area is neatly tucked away as opposed to being the first thing you see when coming into the kitchen. Also, no one actually sat at the desk so we opted for a bottom cabinet for more storage.
Vintage glassware in shades complimenting the wall colour (Amalia by Beautitone Paint) is displayed in the angled glass cabinet. It's a bit of a tight squeeze here and we walk by this corner to get to the patio door, so angling it provided a less hazardous solution.

I really love the polished nickel pagoda lantern. It doesn't have any glass sides, which is key in a kitchen where grease and smoke in the air can be an issue. It was purchased at Universal Lighting in Toronto. It's large and makes a statement - perfect as it is in the direct sight line when you walk in the front door of the house.

What a transformation! I love you Mom and Dad!

Cement tile a la Tom Scheerer....... - Interior Design 2016

I'm running around like crazy trying to button up all my busy biz work before I jet off to the Bahamas on Thursday! I thought it would be apropos to share a couple of Tom Scheerer's Bahama designed kitchens. He resides there part of the year and also designed some of the public spaces at Lyford Cay Club. Long before Pinterest I had these images torn out of my favorite design magazines! (One of these kitchens is in Florida but really who is keeping track)...Besides the limed oak (still obsessed) I love, love, love the walls of cement tile. I MUST do this soon someplace! I swear once I finish my home the way I want it, I'll be itching to do another! Cement tiles will be in order some place. Here are three sources for cement tiles. one, two, three.

Interior Designed..... Cabin Life - Interior Design 2016

This cabin is dreamy isn't it? I love the way each room has its own theme, subtlety using textiles and pieces from around the world..... Indian block print textiles in the bedroom,  a Moroccan tray and kilim rug in the sitting room. My favorite room in the house is definitely the bathroom. I love the warm mustard paintwork and the Bhavacakra above the bath, this room feels the most warm and natural of all the cabins rooms. It feels like it belongs.

I say 'belongs' as the other rooms in the cabin although stunning do definitely look like rooms that have been put together by an interior designer rather than lovingly put together over time. The brief I guess was to give their holiday getaway a 'bohemian cabin' vibe... It just feels a little polished.... and some of the rooms a little incongruous... white carpet in a cabin!

... that is not to say I dont love it..... I would jump at the chance to live here. I would just have to scruff it up a bit, add some more house plants and change the hunting lodge feel of the bedroom.

Easter Sunday Recipe: Wild Chaga Hot Chocolate... - Interior Design 2016

Wild Chaga Hot Chocolate Recipie, suing Wild Chaga from Olivia Clementine

I really, really LOVE chocolate but quit dairy when Alex was diagnosed with being dairy intolerant as a baby, so now when i do 'treat' myself to dairy I can no longer tolerate it either... so I have pretty much given it up and as a previous chocoholic have spent the last year happily exploring my alternatives.

So I thought this Easter I would share one of my dairy free, gluten free, Vegan.... favorite chocolate recipes.... and as here in England there are the obligotory colds and flus circulating and it is really bloody miserable outside ....... what better way to enjoy your chcolate than hot.... and medicinal!!

My absolute favorite recipe for Hot Chocolate is one from Ella aka Deliciously Ella. It is not a cheap recepie to make but it is well worth the spluge... the only adaptation I have made is the addition of medicinal Wild Chaga from Olivia Clementine into the mix.

So what is Chaga and why should you add it to your hot Chocolate?

Well Chaga is in essence a mushroom that grows predominantly of birch trees. It is a powerful healing tool and has shown to heal all the organs of the body, contain high amounts of b vitamins and give energy.... Perfect for coming out of winter hibernation....

Recipe

1 cup of Almond Milk
2 tablespoons of date syrup
2 teaspoons of raw cacao
1 teaspoon of almond butter
Pinch of Salt  (optional I just love the taste of it with chocolate)
1-2 teaspoon(s) of Wild Chaga Powder

Just put all the ingredients into a saucepan and stir until combined. try not to let it boil and loose those all important nutrients

enjoy xx

Love the look - airport style - Interior Design 2016

I'll be honest here, I'm all about comfort when traveling for vacations! Let's face it, planes are either too hot or too cold and flying is far from glamorous these days. (Unless you own a G6 - lucky you) I'm going to be organized with packing this year. Here's what I'll be wearing to the airport. I also drinks tons of water and travel with my design and fashion reads. Happy Weekend and Easter!!! I'd promise to be back with my Shelter Loves post today but I have 11 kids coming over to decorate Easter eggs.

Reading List: Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes - Interior Design 2016

Women Who Run With The Wolves

Women Who Run With The Wolves
Women Who Run With The Wolves
Die Wolfs Frau

Women Who Run With The Wolves

Women Who Run With The Wolves is one of those books on my shelf that has a spine that is falling apart. The first time I read it, well actually I heard it via you tube, I was pregnant and needed a little girl power (yes, I just said 'Girl Power'.... cringe!) motivation/inspiration, to perk me up from a hormone induced existential funk. By the end of the you tube reading, read by Estes herself, I felt empowered and slightly changed....

I am not going to do a proper book review as to be honest I am a totally rubbish writer and could never do this fabulous inspirational book any justice.... but if you havent read it already I really would recommend you buy it, or borrow it from your library and find out for yourselves...

What are some of your favorite books?

xx
