Bells and Tailsmans: Mt. Washington Pottery.... - Interior Design 2016

Beth Katz, Mt Washington Pottery Bellls and Talismans

Beth Katz is the creative force behind Mt. Washington Pottery, a beautiful collection of functional and decorative ceramics.

Beth makes all the work by hand and on the potter's wheel in her Los Angeles, California studio. Her work has an elegant simplicity, which marries the wabi-sabi aesthetic of traditional Japanese ceramics and the modernism of Scandinavian design. These elements are clearly visible in the fluidity of her forms and in the literal mark she leaves of her own hand: the remnant of her fingerprints at the bottom of each piece.

About Beth Katz:

I grew up in the 1970's hippie enclave of Topanga Canyon in Southern California, where I learned the art of pottery. Not realizing ceramics could be more than a hobby I continued my studies in art thinking they could lead to a career as a painter or textile designer, like many of my relatives, or I would follow in the steps of my father and become a clothing designer.

Bluebells..each bluebell is hand formed and hand carved of porcelain and glazed in subtle shades of blues and turquoise. The colors of the bells and beads varydepending on the atmosphere of the kiln and each firing is slightly different - in stock currently the blue on the right

After many years and two long careers, one as a makeup artist in the advertising world and the other as a Creative Director at a top women's magazine, I decided to go to graduate school to study Spiritual Psychology, the best decision I ever made. Studying Psychology led me to the realization that it was time to make my lifelong hobby of creating pottery my primary focus.

Talisman 156. Mt. Washington Pottery’s good luck talisman is inspired by the Indian “Nimbu Mirchi”. In the tradition of the Evil Eye Warder our talisman’s intention is to keep homes and businesses safe from all evil spirits and promote happiness and prosperity within your home and/or business.

The entire breadth of my experience continues to inspire me and influence my work each and every day. My taste and style are a reflection of the freedom of my childhood, the Southern California landscape, and the world of fashion and advertising. All the choices I have made in my life have led to this singular point in time, a time that serendipitously coincides with the resurgence of a new American Craft Movement, which I am blessed to be a part of.

Flower Mandala: Finley Jordan for Aniela Parys - Interior Design 2016

Flower mandala

There are good things about social media and bad. The bad is when people save photos with no links (i have been guilty in the past) but the best is when you put a picture up and invite people to tell you about it. This happened yesterday with the picture above... woo hoo!

I discovered flower mandala's a few years ago and often make them with my little boy (well i make and he destroys) but this outdoor bath scene with a flower mandala really took my breath away.

I quickly learnt that the mandala is the work of Finley Jordan for Aniela Parys's elegant lingerie collection/label and had to share with you guys.

I am sure not many of us would have time for such an elaborate bath time ritual but it is a good reminder for us to take time to relax and treat ourselves every once in a while... especially in the presence of natural bath products.

Loved the look - Interior Design 2016

There are so many cute styles out right now, I'm having trouble containing myself and wallet! Today, I'm sharing my love of cropped jeans. They really give you the opportunity to show off all your adorable shoes. Here I've shared the look "two ways". One look is a bit dressier than the other but they are both fabulous! And design client friendly!
Ummm, Jenna always looks perfect, no?

I have a tan moto leather jacket and a pair of vintage cropped Levi's (someplace). I need to break them out and create this look too. Here are the deets on the goodies above:

This budget friend sweater is 50% off and is another option.

Crushing on - Interior Design 2016

Iconic dining chairs

I've long loved unexpected furniture pairings. Placing a beautifully designed chair from one of the mid-century modern greats with a dining table isn't a new concept. I've had my mind buried in the idea all morning while searching for a client's perfect dining table companion. Here are some favorites along with the designer's name. A number of these are available new or as originals and can be found on sites such as First Dibs, Etsy and Ebay

Saarinen - Tulip Chair

Marcel Breuer - Cesca Chair

Michael Thonet - Bentwood chair 1950's reproductions. The original was designed in the 1800's.

Warren Platner - Platner arm chair

I WOULD love a brass set of these someday for a dining room.

 Saarinen - Executive chair

Thayer Coggin by Milo Baughman - brass leg chairs

Ray and Charles Eames - Eiffel Chair

Milo Baughman metal Chippendale Chairs (are a favorite)

Harry Bertoia for Knoll dining chair

Wow, have I really posted 48 cottages on Shelter? I design small and large projects but always enjoy coming across a home that is tight on space but big on style! Here is my latest cottage crush. This sweet saltbox is home to a creative family in Sag Harbor. All the images are by Tria Giovan. (a favorite home photographer) via

There are too many details to list that I'm loving here. Here's a looksie.

Shelter Loves.. - Interior Design 2016

Que pasa, lovies and happy Friday! I'm sharing all the "great stuff" that crossed my path this week.

1. Hoping all the feminine details and moments I'm seeing in fashion are a sign of good things to come! Are you jumping on the frilly train? I secretly have a little girl (and an 80 year old woman) in me, so I'm in. This dress is stunning.
2. and so is this top!
3. I've always been in awe of a talented calligraphist! Some day when I have an hour to myself I'm going to enroll in a class or two and try my hand at this wonderful art. Anne Robin is such a talent, see for yourself here
4. Grace Bonney's latest book, In The Company of Women, beautifully compiles advice, quotes and inspiration from over 100 artist and entrepreneurs. This will be on my gift giving list for sure.
5. I'm currently having some custom storage built for a client. I can't wait to see it installed next week. I lined the top drawers (on her side anyway) with hot pink velvet and we also used lucite and brass pulls - yum! I'll design something like this for myself at some point, I am OVER DUE for a large closet.
6. It's high time for a new watch. I like this one!!
7. I'm an over thinker! I love this thought.

8. THIS amaze coat was on J.Crew recently and now it's already sold out!! I have a thing for soft, fluffy jackets and coats. I own three. J.Crew, please bring this back - it is so FUN! It was on the site yesterday and it's gone today.

Love the look - Interior Design 2016

Every year I purge my dated, worn clothing and add new classic pieces to my wardrobe. A good quality coat is an investment, choosing a look that is updated, well fitting and not overly trendy is always a good idea! I love it dressed up and down. Giorgia's fuzzy version is AMAZE! (top right). Here are my picks for the timeless camel coat; a wardrobe staple for sure!
