The home of..... Inge King and Grahame King - Interior Design 2016

King House and Studios (1952-64)

So for the first time in 9 years I took a little unplanned break from blogging and it was really nice to disconnect for a while and focus my energies, or lack of energies, elsewhere. A couple of months ago I found out that my recent issues with extreme tiredness, nausea and a range of other physiological symptoms, including fertility issues, were the result of the return of a Pituitary tumour that I thought I had seen the back of in 2013. It is not cancer, and it is treatable but it is was still a bit of a kick in the teeth as I had really wanted another baby..... but alas some things are just not meant to be !

My break from blogging, although much needed was also a bit of a silly move as I find it strangely therapeutic .... so I am back. I have found some beautiful homes, and also beautiful products that I would like to share with you all, and as I have been for some time thinking about the concept of 'home' as both an external and internal space, have contacted some wonderful conscious women to interview for a new series of personal interviews..... so watch this space :)

So for my return I have chosen this beautiful home and sanctury of husband and wife Sculpturist Inge King and Artist Grahame King designed by Architect Robin Boyd. I was brought up in and therefore have always been a fan of 'period' properties but since moving into my 1960's home have really started to appreciate the large windows and more open plan vibe to properties of the middle of last century.

What I really love about this home is that it has huge windows that look onto greenery, such a luxury for a city dweller such as myself. The couples collections of pottery, textiles and artwork are all beautiful rich warm earthy tones that fit in perfectly with the building

Below I have included an extract of the original text by Nigel Bertram, I would strongly urge you to head over to Architecture au to read the full article and also to see the full collection of photos by Dianna Snape

"Robin Boyd’s King House and Studios in Warrandyte, designed for sculptor Inge King and artist Grahame King, was completed in three stages in 1952, 1955 and 1964. The plan for the first stage of this house is an almost-square rectangle, four bays by three, about 120 square metres. The plan is a little confusing at first glance; it does not have a particularly recognizable figure or clear hierarchy of zones. It seems a bit loose and even empty, like an industrial building. There is one main room, with a small bathroom, porch and “bedroom” (which isn’t used as such). The kitchen, raised platform and bathroom each take up one structural bay in an offset, abstract arrangement, which gently partitions the singular space into implied zones. The plan is structurally determined, blunt and logical. It does not easily imply domesticity – making us question, in fact, what a “house” is.
As Inge King explains, after the plans were first submitted to council the “bedroom” was added because the authorities would not permit a dwelling of only one room. The raised bay to the north of the main space is labelled as “painting platform” but was apparently most useful as a dance floor for the Kings’ infamous parties. The underfloor space, which increases in height under this platform, is labelled “food store” but has been used as a workspace and studio – a space entered each morning and left sometime in the afternoon, a true home office. Here the ceiling joists in the main area are barely 1.8 metres above the floor. The exposed structure serves as racks for tools and welding clamps, or places to hang work in progress. Adjoining underfloor space up the slope has been fitted out with watertight cupboards and flyscreened cross-ventilation panels. Large plate glass windows to the north, salvaged from shopfronts, unite the lower workspace with its corresponding raised platform living space above. This underfloor workspace, which extends to a level gravel terrace outside, appears to function as the heart of the house – the engine room."

Love the look - home - Interior Design 2016

Happy Thursday! It seems everyone thinks of revamping their homes in the Spring! I love the impact a dramatic foyer (or smaller entrance area) can have when entering a home. It's the first thing you and your guests will see and it can beautifully set the tone and color palette for the rest of the house! Today, I'm sharing a somewhat relaxed look with natural elements and a play of textures. This set up is both functional and great looking. It is always nice to have a table to place your mail/keys on, a stool for taking off shoes, ample lighting, and mirrors make spaces feel larger and allow that one last peek at your outfit. ;)

Cottage Love #57 - Interior Design 2016

Hola! With summer quickly approaching, I think we're all dreaming of weekend get aways with friends and family. The latest beautiful cottage on my radar is also by one of my favorite designers, Sara Gilbane. Her Long Island weekend retreat is filled with bohemian touches, a fun mix of patterns and a playful color palette. All images from Domino

Spring cleaning and a book recommendation! - Interior Design 2016

'Tis the season to clean, donate and organize your home. I've been spending any spare time on the weekends trying to organize, not only my life (haha) but also my abode. As I've mentioned my house is small (it's just the kids and I) so small home = small closets. I dream of having a large walk in closet again someday. Every Spring I find it helpful and actually calming to get rid of things I don't wear or use. I de-clutter and re organize. In some cases I need to actually organize the area, like my linen closet, for example. This brings me to my next point, I found it helpful to read a book from a pro on the matter. Some people have organizing down to a science, so I was thrilled to receive a copy of Jane Stoller's book: Organizing For Your Lifestyle. Jane's book is a fun, well thought out guide to organizing all aspects of your life from your socks to your suitcase.

A well organized life can truly transform your state of mind, stress and success level! I'm personally very organized with some things and not so much with others. I'm excited to set the inspiration I gained after reading Jane Stoller's book into action. I started with my coat closet last weekend and I'm moving onto my bedroom closet and linen closet this weekend. Next up: will be my bills and basement! Organizing For Your Lifestyle is arranged into common themes to help you organize your home. From the kitchen to the bathroom, Stoller shares ideas, advice and inspiration to help you lead a happier and healthier life. There’s also a special chapter for travel because packing properly for a once-in-a-lifetime trip will make it much more enjoyable!! Purchase the book here

And now some visual inspo of how some seriously organized spaces look:

Yes, I could keep this bedroom closet organized by color very easily!!
I have changed over to mostly felt hangers, everything actually stays in place on them!

Love how Gen organized her jewels! I only really wear what I can see!

MY DREAM BEDROOM LOOKS LIKE THIS, PAPER, SHOE COLLECTION AND ALL!!!!
I need to purge my small closet after looking at this image!!

Love the look - Interior Design 2016

Although, I still love to put outfits together and dress up, I can't lie, the crazy selection of cool sneakers and athleisure wear available in today's world is amazing. Long gone are the days of trying to find something somewhat stylish and casual to wear without looking like a slob or as if you just stepped off the treadmill! I say? Bring it!! Here are a couple looks to pair with white jeans!

Shelter Loves... - Interior Design 2016

Happy Saturday loves!! I've been drawn to feminine details and relaxing moments lately.
Clearly it's evident with this week's pins and posts! Have a fabulous weekend. xx

1. Aerin Lauder's designs are flawless and beautiful without being overly predictable. Her collaboration (which I shared the plates a few weeks back) with William's Sonoma Home is gorgeous as is her Palm Beach home that she drew inspiration from. I love this photo wall moment and the way the frames are displayed.
2. THIS! and exhale stress too!!
3. Pink has always been one of my favorites! J. Crew is having 25% off their full price items and 40% off all sale items, there are some great deals out there. Everyone looks pretty in pink! 💗
4. This sconce! I must find a home for a pair.
5. Julia's blog is amazing. Her husband is a photographer and captures the most beautiful moments in her life and of their home. I have a very similar bed to this one. Today is the perfect day to cozy down and read a book with a cup of tea! My advice is to invest in the good bedding

Also, Happy Earth Day!! I am looking forward to green grass and peony season!

Crushing on: woven pendants - Interior Design 2016

I love this one.
Woven pendants give a space a textural, casual elegance. The trend in fashion and homes is to create a comfortable, welcoming but updated look with an unexpected mix of layers and finishes.

Similar light Serena and Lily.

Love the look - home - Interior Design 2016

Hello, hello friends! Between Easter weekend and my business I've been running non stop. (oh and school vacation!!) I'm excited that I'm blogging today and to share that I've started a new series. As most of you know, I share my fashion favorites and create an outfit based on current inspiration almost weekly. I've decided to add a bi-weekly room post to the "love the look series".  I hope you had a fabulous holiday and if you're local, vacation week!

With summer around the corner and no plans for a vacay anytime soon, I thought I'd day dream and devise a design based on creating a tropical oasis by the pool this summer season. Here are the details on my scheme and finds!! Enjoy. xx

Chaise lounges - LOOK at these! They are nothing short of fabulous! As is this pink umbrella!!
Garden stool - a place to rest your cold drink or cocktail of course. I liked the idea of mixing pale grey with the white chaises and aqua cushions.

This Sunblock (SPF 30) from Beautycounter  is hands-down the best I have tried. I use it under my makeup everyday. It's free of harmful chemicals, goes on smoothly and does not leave any white residue. (that drives me crazy) For a limited time, with your purchase of a full sized tube you'll receive a travel size for free! (perfect for your purse or beach bag)

Melamine plates - This tropical print is beautiful.
Striped cotton pool towel
Swan float

In my dreams.. - Interior Design 2016

Let's play a game for a few minutes called, "let's pretend".  Let's pretend I am a famous actress and have a gazillion dollars. I certainly would have a house built and design every last detail...with that said, I'm loving what Molly has done with her gorgeous Pacific Palisades home and property. Molly Simms is a professed design junkie. She has fabulous taste and did an amazing job creating the house of her dreams for her family. I'm especially loving her mix of new and old styles and the use of her paint colors and ideas. Let's take a look shall we? I have JUST the client to show that kitchen to for inspiration! Do you have design project you'd like help with?? We're taking on new client's at Shelter! xx All images via AD.
