Shelter Loves - Interior Design 2016

Hello all! I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Mondays can be a drag but instead, I've been trying to approach the day as a kick off to a great week. I ran out of time to share this post on Friday, I had meetings and spent the balance of the day prepping for my daughter's First Communion on Saturday. I've been inspired by an array of goodies lately, here's the latest:

1. Vintage fashion from beauties such as Brigette Bardot.
2.  Peasant style and relaxed blouses and pretty much anything from Sezane. I adore this one, it looks SO cute on.
3. Amazing laundry rooms and this particular shade of green/gray..
4. Truth.
5.  Beautycounter sugar scrub and body lotion gift set would make any Mother feel extra special.
6. This feminine bed would finish off any little girl's room.
7. I mentioned that my daughter had her first communion last weekend, we had a perfect day weather wise. I also had her wear a floral head wreath and could not have been happier with how it looked. These girls look precious, it's not often they get to dress up. It was treat for me seeing Emerson! :)

Poolside perfection - Interior Design 2016

I've been slightly obsessed with homes, yards and pools since I was a young child.  I don't have a Shelley's glorious yard but I do dream of owning a pool someday! The design would also have classic roots with glamorous details. Shelley Johnstone Paschke's yard is just that and more. How wonderful would it be to step outside your home in the warmer months and feel as if you are on vacation? Shelly's pink towels were inspired by her stays at La Fontelina hotel in Capri. Shelley sketched out the pool house design for the architect.
Her home is a Dutch Colonial Revival with cedar-shake shingles.

Homemade: Wood Rub Recipe - Interior Design 2016

Wooden Spoon rub

In my bid to be a little more waste conscious I have come to the conclusion that I really need to start looking after the things I already have.... so I don't need to buy more...... even if I want too :)

One of my little obsessions is wooden utensils, wooden lidded glass jars and crockery. I guess it is reminds me of baking and cooking with my mum as a kid. I was so pleased when, at 18, I left home that my mum donated a couple of her wooden spoons to me...... and was so sad when one cracked a few years ago after being left it in a boiling pan of soup.

I now buy wooden spoons, bowls and plates when ever I come across them in charity shops...... which sadly happens less frequently than I like these days.

So........to protect them I have been meaning to buy some wax for a little while......but decided last week to look up a recipe and to my great delight found that I not only already had all the ingredients required, but it is unbelievably easy to make!!!

After I posted the above picture on Instagram I got a few asks for the receipe so thought I would share it on here..... As it wasn't a planned post I haven't taken any great pictures or indeed any of the making process but it is so easy you won't need them anyway :)

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons Beeswax (try and get the creamy coloured pellets not white as they haven't been beached)
6 tablespoons Coconut oil or Walnut oil (not olive as can go rancid quickly)

Instructions
Over a medium heat double boiler melt the beeswax and oil together, stirring occasionally. Once mixed together and runny pour into a glass jar and wait for it too set

Once your wax/ rub has set use a lint free cloth (I actually used my fingers) to rub a generous amount  into your wooden beauties. Leave overnight  ( or 4 hours if inpatient like me) and then using a lint free cloth buff :)

Below is a little photo of one of my favourite wooden charity shop finds, a wooden fruit bowl, that shows the before (left) and after (right).... it actually looks a lot more noticeable in 'real life'. It has really brought out the grain out and enhanced the warm red tone of the wood.

Love the look - transitional style - Interior Design 2016

Happy Friday! I saw the Broadway musical 'On your Feet' last night, needless to say I've been singing Gloria Estefan songs all day. It's a fun one if you are looking for a night out. I'm looking forward to pulling my Spring clothing to the front of the closet. Here's the a pretty classic outfit for transitional weather. Have a fabulous weekend. Those are the perfect cropped kick flare jean by the way and the price won't break the bank.

6 ways with Eucalyptus in the home ..... - Interior Design 2016

When my partner brought me a big bunch of flowers a few months ago the last bits to remain were the Eucalyptus branches...... they are such a beautiful shade of green and the smell is so invigorating.....

....I now have them in a lovely large mug on my table and not only do they look beautiful but they have a lovely scent too.   Since making an effort to rid my life of plastic and adopt a more zero waste life style, fragrancing my home naturally has been on my mind....I get through a lot of candles (i add essential oils as they are burning).... and the great thing about Eucalyptus is not only does it last a long time but when you are done you can stick it in the compost!!!

Interested in what else I could do with these beautiful leaves and found lots of seriously good ideas so here are some great ways of incorporating Eucalyptus into your home

1) The Vase
Quick and simple.. yet so effective.....Eucalyptus lasts for a seriously long time and just a few sprigs look and smell great and add some character to your home

2) The wall hanging
Love this idea from Sarah Sherman Samuel using Eucalyptus branches to make a wall hanging, so simple to make and looks so pretty, I recon this would also look really cool hanging from a window :)

Sarah Sherman Samuel - DIY Eucalyptus wall hanging

3) In the Shower

When the leaves are touched the scent is released so hanging some Eucalyptus in the shower is the perfect place to hang it to get the full sensory benefit. Especially good for the cold season... must remember this trick for next winter!!1

4) Mix with other long lasting plants for a pretty bouquet

I saw this lovely bouquet on Pinterest and love the combination of the cotton plant and the Eucalyptus. i would be mega happy with a bunch like this :)

Just a little note of warning, Eucalyptus can be poisonous if ingested in large amounts... so be wary of it around little children, especially when pairing it with something child friendly like cotton

5) Eucalyptus' make  the most stunning houseplants... and much less high maintenance than those fiddle leaf figs. These would be great placed in walkways so you got the full aroma of the leaves when you brushed past them...mmmmm!

Eucalyptus as a houseplant

6) Eucalyptus leaves make the most beautiful natural dyes....I have been reading Rebecca Desnos' book and Plants are magic magazines but still haven't yet tried working with natural dyes. this is one of my big aims for this coming summer. I love the idea of using individual leaves

Beach House Chic - Interior Design 2016

One of the responsibilities of an interior designer is to create a cohesive plan throughout a home. This beach house located in The Hamptons is ridiculously large (12,000 square feet) but the interior designer was still able to design a warm, inviting environment using a beautiful blend of organic textiles, finishes, space planning and furnishings. See more images here. Starting with a strong concept can make all the difference in the world. Interior designer Tamara Magel was inspired by European farmhouses.

Shelter Loves... - Interior Design 2016

Ahhh school vacation week is always interesting! I'm balancing the kids and work this week so I can't promise epic posts..It's torrential out and feels more like January than April, so they aren't even able to go outside. Today I'm sharing Friday's post. Here's what I pinned and adored last week.

1. Springy interiors like Sarah Bartholomew's latest project. It's on the cover of Traditional Home. It's all sorts of traditional with a twist and very cheery! Photographed by Emily Followill. Written by Tori Mellott
2. Who wants a personalized monogram? I do, I do! This one is from Etsy
3. This dress looks sweet on. I'm feeling eyelet this season.
4. My clients still request classic subway tile, I love the detail a liner adds.
5. Lord, I can't wait till white tshirt season!
6. Des Linden and Kawauchi kicked butt today. The conditions for running were horrible but they sailed across the finish line beautifully. It's inspirational watching all the runners. Des is from the USA and Japanese runner Yuki won the marathon in my town this winter!! Congrats to everyone who braved the weather and ran the race, it's not an easy feat!!!
7. This Elsie de Wolfe resonates with me today! There is nothing more rewarding career wise for me than a project that turns out beautifully and a very happy client!

Zero Waste : The 28 day Plastic Purge Challenge - Interior Design 2016

Jorge Gamboa's Plastic bag in the shape of an Iceberg

So this new year I made a new years resolution ... to wear matching socks every day ..... and although I am very proud to say I have achieved this so far (the first time since I was 16), I am now thinking it may be time to set myself a bit more of a challenging goal, that has a little more impact than what I am wearing on my feet. So I have decided to take steps to live a more 'Zero Waste' lifestyle.... starting with reducing and purging the plastic within the home and our lives.

Although we always recycle and try and be mindful of the amount of plastic we use, we do still buy a lot of berries that come in those plastic boxes, and other groceries that come with totally unnessary plastic wrapping - like bananas (why are they in plastic?)

So having found the 28 day Plastic Purge challenge image (below) on Pinterest, I am now going to set myself  the (relevant) challenges listed. I have found some great products, how too's and recipes to share with you all but am no expert so I would also really love your help. If you have any ideas that can help me on my way then please either leave a comment or email me at moontomoon@live.co.uk.

The Cutting Garden - Interior Design 2016

While I have blooms on my mind, I thought I'd share a summer goal with you! As you may recall, last year, my mission was to plant a thriving herb garden, well.... it kind of failed. The pots I planted did well but the herbs did not get enough sun and never really took off, hence my lack of photos on the blog. While I still plan to grow herbs in another location, my aim this year is to grow a small flower cutting garden. My daughter and I have been reading a sweet book every night before bed; How Now, by Raphael Cushnir. I bought it years ago but my eight year old is enjoying every suggestion and I am loving the quiet time with her before bed. The latest daily "celebration" detailed discovering your quality of "openness" to trying new things. With this concept, the goal is to realize every moment and day can carry a fresh new perspective and discovery! This passage had me thinking of my own life. The intent is to step out of your comfort zone and continually try something fresh..This can be something as simple as cooking a new food you have never tried to a larger venture. I've never cultivated and have always wanted to attempt to grow a cutting garden so it's on the top of my "NEVER before" to do list! I'm looking forward to tagging along with my friend Julia on her yearly garden store run for seeds and blooms! I'm also purchasing these two beautiful books to help me out! The first, Martha's latest release: Martha's Flowers. (this would make a lovely Mother's Day gift)

The second, is by gardener Elizabeth Benzakein from the GORGEOUS Floret Farm in Mount Vernon, Washington. Her instagram page is also an inspiring visual treat. Elizabeth's book: Floret's Farm: Cut Flower Garden (another fabulous Mother's Day gift idea)

I am by NO means suggesting my blooms or garden will look like this, but "goals" are good!! 🙌🙌🙌 hehe
